For this installation I was responding to Ann Hamilton's Reserve video. (You can catch a snippet of the video in her profile in the first season of art 21). In Reserve, the camera follows the artist's hand drawing each letter of the alphabet in one continuous line. What I am interested in is the movement of the hand and how no matter how abstract the writing becomes, especially in fast gestural writing, what is scribbled down is never truly abstract because it is legible. In my work I use the parameters of written text (i.e. writing's physicality, gesture) to create new abstract symbols that reference writing.
